A highly disappointing incident occurred the other day as President Medvedev (the guy who claimed that fighting corruption was high on his priorities list) said that he was opposed to controlling officials’ expenses.

На днях произошло очень и очень разочаровывающее событие, президент Медведев (это тот, который заявлял, что борьба с коррупцией у него в приоритетах) сказал, что он против контроля расходов чиновников.

Andrey Borodin, former president of the Bank of Moscow, said in an interview with Vedomosti that businessman Igor Yusufov assured him that he was acting under the instructions of President Dmitry Medvedev during talks over buying shares in the bank.
“Yusufov told me directly that he was acting on the behalf of and under the instructions of President Dmitry Medvedev, who made a decision regarding the government gaining control over the Bank of Moscow,” Borodin told Vedomosti. At the time, Yusufov was the president’s special envoy for energy cooperation, Borodin said, adding that his acquaintances confirmed that Yusufov was among the president’s confidants.Ведомости

A couple of weeks ago I agreed to share my thoughts with a federal TV network for a story about the criminal prosecution of the former Bank of Moscow management and former Intake owner and the spouse of former Moscow Mayor Yuri Liuzhou Yelena Battering. I have little idea what footage the TV folks put to use since I don’t watch Russian television. However both the interview and the pre-interview conversation turned out quite representative, in my opinion.
«How wonderful that you agreed,” I was greeted by their correspondent. “We have just come from the new Bank of Moscow chief Mikhail Kuzovlev and he failed to explain to us, in terms we could understand, how exactly they were taken advantage of.

Пару недель назад я согласился поделиться своими соображениями с одним из федеральных телеканалов для сюжета об уголовном преследовании бывшего руководства Банка Москвы и бывшей владелицы компании “Интеко”, жены бывшего московского градоначальника Юрия Лужкова – Елены Батуриной. Сложно сказать, что именно использовали телевизионщики: российское телевидение я не смотрю. Однако само интервью и предшествовавшая ему беседа вышла, на мой взгляд, весьма показательной.
“Как хорошо, что Вы согласились, – этими словами встретил меня корреспондент, – мы только что от нового главы Банка Москвы Михаила Кузовлева, он так и не смог доступно объяснить, в чем их надули”.
Мои слова о том, что вовсе не убежден в том, что эта сделка была противозаконной и именно она нанесла какой-то ущерб Банку Москвы или кому бы то ни было еще, собеседника явно обескуражил. “Но ведь был же какой-то обман, вот и прокуратура…” (more…)

Former Bank of Moscow head Andrey Borodin’s defence appealed against the charges of embezzlement of bank funds, lawyer Mikhail Dolomanov told BFM.ru.
Dolomanov noted that the charges contain no other counts besides the issue of loan to “Premier Estate”. According to the lawyer, an extension of a secured loan cannot be regarded as a reason for criminal prosecution of the banker. The lawyer pointed out that Bank of Moscow received more than 58 hectares of Moscow land as collateral. Mikhail Dolomanov said that “Premier Estate” was paying interests, while part of the loan was repaid in advance.Business FM

Доломанов указывает, что никаких других эпизодов, кроме выдачи кредита фирме «Премьер Эстейт», обвинение не содержит. По мнению юриста, выдача банком обеспеченного залогом кредита не является основанием для уголовного преследования финансиста. Yesterday, experts were unanimously stunned by the Bank of Moscow H1 international financial statements, which were to have come out poorly – after all the bank’s new owners, VTB Group, had repeatedly referred to the vast scale of problems in the bank. The gaping hole in the Bank of Moscow balance sheet, something that VTB has asked for RUR 295 billion from the Government to fix, did not appear in the IFRS statements. On Friday, Tverskoy Court of Moscow dismissed the complaint of the former head of Bank of Moscow Andrey Borodin’s defence. Lawyer Vladimir Krasnov was requesting to eliminate the violations committed in the course of preliminary investigation. A day earlier the same court refused to even take into consideration a slander complaint, filed by the lawyer on behalf of the former president of the bank against the Investigative Department of the Interior Ministry.
